St. Angelo Castle, Rome. Mixed Media
This was one of my first tries at mixed media; burnishing photos onto canvas.
I must admit, it's one of my favorites.
This was a photograph I took when my husband and I were in Rome. This is a small cafe in St. Angelo's castle, not far from the Vatican. The light was perfect, and the red table cloths just screamed, "Photograph me!" I've posted the original picture as well as the finished artwork so you can compare.
The black and white photo was printed on 8" x 10" paper and burnished onto an 11" x 14" canvas. The burnishing process is arduous; a lot of peeling of paper without taking off the printed ink that has adhered to the canvas. It will never be perfect, but that's the beauty of burnishing images on canvas; it provides an antiquated look. Thus, the reason for the image I chose.
The color is filled in using pencil. I purposely only wanted the red tablecloths to show for selected color, focus as well as contrast.
